Travel Fiend and Carol Chen

I've been really busy the past weekend - digging up old photos (gasp! hardcopies with negatives! before the era of digital cameras!) to find out where in the world I've been. You can say that I made many many trips ... down memory lane that is. And not just the travel photos brought back fond memories of course... so did the "everyday" pictures of me and my family, celebrating one another's birthdays, changing hairstyles and fashion through the years.... of my classmates in RGS, AJC and NUS, many that I've forgotten the names of but still remember what we did together and jokes we've shared... band camps.... performances.... Megan and her tenor sax.... :)

Oh right, my goal in this exercise was to compile a list of places I've visited and trips I've made. After getting distracted by all the side trips mentioned above, I managed to reach my goal. The result is in the left column (on the main page of this blog), a bit further down, under "Around the World". I believe it to be 95% complete. For the first 20 years of my life, before 1996, I really don't remember going to many places other than shuttling between Taiwan and Singapore. So most of my travelling occurred in the last 10 years... venturing into my third continent of Europe only less than 2 years ago (after Asia and North America). I'd like to visit the rest some day... Australia, South America, Africa, Antartica?? Notice that these are mostly in the southern hemisphere? Ok, except for Africa which has more land above the equator than below. And I've lived almost ON the equator - in Singapore - for about half my life (so far).

So yes I don't do cold very well. But yet I enjoyed the cool weather over the weekend. Bruce and I actually ran more errands than usual so that we could enjoy the "refreshing" cold. Shall we go to Central market? Ok! Then it was Blockbuster, May Hua supermarket, Walmart, and even the Mall (he wanted to get some jeans but we didn't find any on sale). The thing is, when I got back from Finland (0F), it was 80F here in Dallas. I got heat rash (not common for me)... so cooling down again these few days allowed my body to recover. We want to stay at an "ice hotel" sometime, just for the experience. They have those in Canada, Sweden, Finland etc. They are open for only a few months a year and have to be rebuilt each year (wonder why!)

Lastly, someone looking for Carol Chen? (Yeap, that's my name.) From Richardson, TX? (Well I used to live there....) In the school band - or choir? (Yes, both actually.) Go to J. J. Pearce? (Uh... no....) Ok, nevermind, bye.

I've had a few encounters like that. Can't remember exactly, but I think mostly on ICQ. Some went straight from "Carol Chen?" to "J. J. Pearce?" and got disappointed. So who is this famous alter ego of mine that people keep mistaking me for? We seem to have a lot in common, yeah? WRONG! Check this out. The Carol Chen from J. J. Pearce is Miss Chinatown USA 2005! No wonder guys hope to chat her up online. Besides being a beauty queen, she's also a dancer and a model. Me? I've got two left feet and I'm a total geek. You know the show "Beauty and the Geek"? Bruce and I joke that if we go on the show, he'd be the beauty and I'm the geek. Better yet, I'm doubly geeky - as I'm a band geek as well as a computer geek! Ack!

Just to keep you up to date - Carol Chen, former student of J.J. Pierce High School, was crowned Miss San Francisco 2006 on March 12. The Chinese Newspapers are carrying the pictures, but I have yet to find any in the San Fransisco papers. Hopefully they will post the results on the web site below soon. It's the first time in the 60 year history of Miss S.F. that an Asian-American has won the title.

She will compete for the title of Miss California., June 26-July 1 - 2006 at William Saroyan Theater, in Fresno, Calif

She is very stuck up. She is nothing compare with my friend. My friend is also a beauty pageant winner and also she is a model. And She is a first runner up for Miss Universe pageant. One day, my friend went up to her and said,"Hi". She ignored her. She thinks she is better than everybody.

Hmm, maybe she wasn't paying attention? I know I zone out occasionally (ok, frequently) and have unintentionally ignored people before. Then again, she doesn't look like someone who'd be spacing out... oh well, I don't know her so I can't say what she's like, except that on the surface we seem to be very different, even though we have the same name :P

haha... i just have to comment because this is the first thing that pops up when i google my name! and because i wanted to share a few things in case people were wondering:

1) i would never think i am better than everyone and people who are like that REALLY get on my nerves. i also love talking to people so either i didn't see your friend or it wasn't me she met. thanks for keeping an open mind, carol. :)

2) i'm a complete techie and was definitely a band/guard geek in hs so we might actually have more in common than you think. ;D

have a great day!
