Two RGS Songs

Some of the best years of my life were in Raffles Girls School (my parents would probably beg to differ, as I didn't do very well academically during that period). Many fond memories including band practices and performances; being part of the "clan of the back row" with Alicia, Olivia and Frances (weren't we kinda rowdy?); and even conducting the school while singing the National Anthem during morning assemblies.

I usually have a hard time remembering lyrics. Take for example the National Anthem, even though we sang it everyday for years, I still don't quite know all the words (perhaps the fact that it's in Malay has a part to play as well...). When I listen to a new CD, usually by the third or fourth round I can hum along to most of the songs, but it'll be a miracle if I caught more than five lines of lyrics.

This morning I was going through some emails where my ex-classmates were discussing about the RGPS school song... but I didn't go to RGPS :) Although I think the tune of the SMPS school song is coming back to me in bits and pieces (and that has to happen before the words will come). But when they talked about the song "Dedication", WHAM, the melody hit me - WITH THE LYRICS - and rang clearly in my head! For one reason or other, these words stuck with me through the years, impervious to my otherwise failing memory.

Along with this, I started to remember another song, the "motto" song. So here they are, dedicated to all (ex) RGS girls who might come across this blog entry. I'll post the tunes later when I hunt down a nice music notation software.

Filiae Melioris Aevi!

We have shared our morning days
And gone through all rainy nights
Even in the darkest of nights
Stars still light up our way

Tomorrow is a beautiful dream
A dream that will be fulfilled
Cross the bridge of rainbow
In search of the gold

For here we stand
Our dearest friend
Sincerely from our hearts we wish
May streams of sunlight
Shine like rays of hope
Hand in hand, we'll work and strive
For the best things in life

Filiae Melioris Aevi

Now as we remember
Strains of our school song
Call to mind our motto
Filiae Melioris Aevi

Filiae Melioris Aevi
Daughters of a better age
United by a common goal
Filiae Melioris Aevi

Happy New Year Carol! You have an incredible memory, I can barely recall anything from last week, much less from when we were teenagers. But I definitely agree that the Clan of the Back Row was the coolest group to be in :) Didn't we pool our hole punchers and liquid paper bottles or something ...

Hey Alicia, thanks for stopping by! Happy 2007 to you too! My memory isn't that great, I can't remember what I ate yesterday or what my boss told me this morning. But you know how we, for some reason, can remember many clear details from certain chapters of our lives? Well, RGS was one such chapter. And your memory isn't bad either, you reminded me about the liquid paper stuff... LIQUID PAPER! Haha... do people even use those anymore?

Orientation just ended! So sad... These songs were one of those we learnt at camp. Here's one more...

Pass it on

It only takes a spark
To get a fire going
And soon all those around
Can warm up in it's glowing

That's How it is with God's love
Once you experience it
You'll want(Yes you'll want)
To pass(to pass)
It on
(pass it on, pass it on, pass it pass it pass it on)

What a wonderous time is spring
When all the treees are budding
The birds begin to sing
the flowers start their blooming

That's How it is with God's love
Once you experience it
You'll want to sing
It's fresh like spring
You'll want(Yes you'll want)
To pass(to pass)
It on
(pass it on, pass it on, pass it pass it pass it on)

I wish for you my friend
This happiness that I've found
You can depend on Him
It matters not where you're bound
I'll shout it from the mountaintop (RAFFLES!)
I want the world to know
The lord of love has come to me
And I want(Yes I want)
To pass(to pass)
It on
(pass it on, pass it on, pass it pass it pass it on)

Hi Alisa, thanks for sharing the lyrics to Pass It On. We definitely sang that a lot too. Brings back memories. I was in Richardson house, and when I came to the States I stayed in Richardson, Texas (a suburb of Dallas) for a few years. Don't know why that crossed my mind. Maybe because you mentioned Buckle. I just realized I'm 19 years your senior. Hmmm....

Hey, just an old girl (class of 88) passing through. Got misty eye reading the lyrics. and even mistier (?!) thinking for good old Richardson. Always a winner!!

We are lethal as onions,
We are zany to the core
We are blue forevermore,
We are richardsonians!

DDDDDDD: i'm scared okayy. and the songs are fab and so are the cheers. we just learned the united one today.

Hehe, I just happened to google the lyrics for Dedication and it brought me to this blog (: I'm a graduated-year-2008-Bucklean (since everyone else is sharing this info).

I haven't got much to say actually, except that I've not heard of the Motto song before O:

And well, Dedication has always been my favourite song at RGS, not only because we sing it during all our school functions, but also because it was that one song that seemed to sum up all the hopes we had as ickle Sec Ones during Orientation'05 for the 4 years we would be spending at RGS.

Right, that's all I've to say haha xD Um, thanks for sharing the lyrics!
